Estimate your body fat percentage using the U.S. Navy method
A male with a 32-inch waist, 15-inch neck, and 70-inch height has an estimated body fat of approximately 15%, placing him in the Fitness category.
A male with a 36-inch waist, 16-inch neck, and 70-inch height has an estimated body fat of approximately 21%, placing him in the Average category.
A female with a 30-inch waist, 13-inch neck, 65-inch height, and 38-inch hips has an estimated body fat of approximately 27%, placing her in the Fitness to Average range.
The U.S. Navy method is typically accurate within 1-3% of more precise methods like DEXA scans. It is one of the most reliable circumference-based methods and is used by the U.S. military for fitness assessments.
For men: Essential fat is 2-5%, Athletic is 6-13%, Fitness is 14-17%, Average is 18-24%, above 25% is considered high. For women: Essential fat is 10-13%, Athletic is 14-20%, Fitness is 21-24%, Average is 25-31%, above 32% is considered high.
Use a flexible tape measure. Waist: measure at navel level while standing and breathing normally. Neck: measure below the Adam's apple at the narrowest point. Hips (women): measure at the widest point. Take 3 measurements and use the average.
